I acquired a condominium unit in Garrison School Lofts and established this blog to narrate my personal journey living in a U.S. Condominium Association. Over the past three and a half years, I have found myself under the administration, operation, and management of other unit owners who serve as both the Master Association Board of Directors and my Garrison Lofts Condominium Association. It has come to light that their actions do not align with the Illinois Compiled Statutes (ILCS) and/or the Illinois Condominium Act.
In my pursuit of resolution, I sought assistance from the Association’s attorney, whose services I pay for through assessments, as well as local authorities. I even resorted to legal action, taking the Master Association President to court to secure a stalking no-contact order, safeguarding my personal and human rights, property rights as a unit owner, and civil rights as a Black American. Regrettably, these efforts proved futile. The persistent stress has led to multiple emergency room visits, motivating me to utilize this blog as a therapeutic outlet and a call for help, shedding light on the challenges faced in condominium associations across the country.
Before delving into the intricacies of my struggles, I want to articulate my reasons for choosing not to relocate, despite recommendations from the Master Association President and other members of my condominium association. My commitment is rooted in my love for Rockford, where I spent my formative years from third grade to high school. Memories of dedicated teachers like Mr. Bonavia and Mrs. Powers, along with cherished moments at Moris Kennedy and Sinissippi parks, make Rockford an integral part of my identity.
Upon returning to Rockford after four decades, I made a deliberate choice to purchase a home, envisioning the safety, tranquility, and property enjoyment that a gated community would afford. Unfortunately, my experience has proven otherwise. The purpose of this blog is to share my story, not to sow discord about racism, prejudice, and discrimination. However, I will disclose certain aspects of my experience with these issues, as they seem inexplicable in the context of my peaceful nature.
It is disheartening that my property has been jeopardized, leaving me with a sense of injustice and a lack of avenues for resolution, except through a judge who empathized with my perspective. My foremost objective is to seek assistance from local media and any attorneys willing to represent me impartially, avoiding hometown bias. I am fervently pursuing justice and the restoration of my property.
The following is my experience.
